In my last article, I shared how ChatGPT can make your day-to-day work easier as a loan officer—writing emails, summarizing notes, creating borrower-friendly explanations, and more.
But here’s the thing: the difference between basic and pro-level ChatGPT use comes down to how you prompt it.
Most people treat ChatGPT like Google: they type a quick question and hope for the best.
Loan officers don’t have time for “hope.” You need precision.
That’s where pro-level prompting comes in.
The Formula: Role + Context + Interview + Action/Task
Think of prompts as instructions for your assistant. The clearer you are, the better the work you get back.
Instead of: “Write an email about refinancing.”
Try this: “Act as a loan officer writing to a first-time homeowner. Ask me up to x number of questions for additional context. Draft a clear, reassuring email about why refinancing now could lower their monthly payment by $200.”
With just a little extra detail, the output goes from generic to ready-to-send.
🔹 My personal favorite way to use this?
I set ChatGPT in the role of a strategic partner or thought leadership editor.
👉 Example prompt:
“Act as a SaaS executive coach. I’ll share my idea for a LinkedIn post. Ask me up to 3 questions for more context. Then refine it so it reads like tactical thought leadership for loan officers, keeping my voice confident but approachable.”
This turns ChatGPT into more than a task-doer. It becomes a thinking partner—helping sharpen my positioning, clarify complex ideas, and polish messaging so it lands with authority.
That’s a massive value-add for any LO who’s trying to stand out in a crowded market.
The Power of Constraints
ChatGPT can give you pages of text if you’re not careful. But in your world, brevity is currency.
Instead of: “Summarize this call.”
Try this: “Summarize this borrower call into 3 action items. Keep each under 12 words and list deadlines.”
Now you’re getting what you actually need—concise, actionable, usable.
Style Matching: Making AI Sound Like YouIf
If you’ve ever read a ChatGPT draft and thought, “That doesn’t sound like me,” you’re not alone. That’s where style matching comes in.
Instead of: “Write a LinkedIn post.”
Try this: “Write a LinkedIn post in a confident but approachable voice. Make it 5 short sentences. End with a question to drive engagement.”
This not only shapes the content—it shapes how you show up to your network.
Why This Matters
ChatGPT is like a junior team member:
If you give vague directions, you’ll get vague results.
If you’re clear and specific, you’ll get high-quality drafts that save you hours.
The more you practice pro-level prompting, the more you’ll realize how much weight you can take off your shoulders—without losing your voice or your expertise.
What’s Next
This article is part of my AI for the Modern Loan Officer series.
Next up: Vibe Coding — how loan officers can build actual micro-apps with plain speak in tools like Lovable, Figma + Make, and Replit. No heavy engineering. We’ll ship a few “tomorrow-usable” utilities (status-text bot, doc-checklist generator, rate-drop watcher) by literally describing what we want and letting the tool scaffold the code/flows.
